Physiotherapy is a modality of treatment which focuses on movement encompassing elements of rehabilitation, injury prevention, and the promotion of general health and fitness. Treatment should address and resolve underlying physical issues that are preventing a patient from engaging in activities or causing pain. Physiotherapists take a holistic approach to patient care, reviewing the patient’s lifestyle and encouraging healthy lifestyle choices to support their treatment. The ultimate goal of physiotherapy is to restore, maintain, and maximize a patient’s physical abilities, including strength, function, and overall wellbeing.
Physiotherapy helps improve a wide range of physical conditions. Many patients undergo physiotherapy to recover from injuries or rehabilitate the physical effects of disease or disability. Others may use it to manage acute or chronic medical conditions. Athletes use physiotherapy to improve and maintain peak performance and to prevent injury. In addition to the functional uses of physiotherapy, treatment can also improve a variety of other medical conditions including:
An initial physiotherapy session typically includes a thorough assessment of a patient’s condition. This may involve watching the patient move, including walking, stretching, and performing some basic exercises. The therapist will also ask the patient questions about their general health and wellbeing. Once the therapist understands the full extent of the patient’s condition, he or she will create a customized treatment plan to address the specific needs of the patient. Depending on the patient’s condition, the physiotherapy sessions may include massage, stretching, guided exercise, and the use of technological treatments such as lasers, ultrasound, electrotherapy, and hydrotherapy. In addition to the physiotherapy sessions, the patient will be given exercises and stretches to complete at home to supplement the work done during a treatment session. The therapist may also give the patient advice on diet and lifestyle changes to further support their work together.
