Orthotics Q & A

What are orthotics?

Orthotics are shoe implants that aid in the support of the foot and back. They’re designed to correct imbalances in walking or gait of the wearer. These can range from partial covering of the foot such as the toe or arch, to a full covering which supports all parts of the foot. Orthotics can be purchased over the counter or can be customized with the patient’s specific foot in mind. While more supportive, custom orthotics are typically more expensive than the over the counter version. Quality Chiropractic offers custom orthotics specifically crafted for the individual patient.

Why should I see a chiropractor for orthotics?

The doctors at Quality Chiropractic specialize in the movement and function of the whole body, not just the feet. Quality Chiropractic believes that dysfunction in one area of the body can affect other areas and cause pain in different areas of the body. With this in mind, the doctors will evaluate the patient’s walking gait, spinal alignment, and limb function before prescribing the perfect orthotic for a patient. Through years of expertise, Quality Chiropractic enables patients to have increased mobility and reduced pain through orthotics. Additionally, through evaluation of the entire skeletal structure, patients may notice that other chronic pain is reduced or eliminated.

What conditions can be treated with orthotics?

Orthotics are designed to treat a variety of physical pain and ailments. When a joint or bone isn’t properly aligned to meet the body’s gait, opposing muscle areas overcompensate to create balance. Over time, these opposing muscles and ligaments will begin to fatigue and signal the body through pain. Once corrected by orthotics, these affected areas are able to function normally and pain is reduced. Orthotics are beneficial for many conditions including:

  • Arch strain
  • Chronic lower back pain
  • Flat feet
  • Forefoot pain
  • Heel pain
  • Hip pain
  • Knee pain
  • Plantar fasciitis
  • Sacroiliac joint dysfunction
  • Shin pain
