Metabolic syndrome is the collection of factors that indicate an increased risk of developing serious health conditions including heart disease. Metabolic refers to the normal function of all of the body’s systems, not just the rate at which a person uses energy. The five risk factors included in metabolic syndrome include:
Unfortunately, the risk factors of metabolic syndrome do not produce many obvious symptoms. The most physically obvious symptom is a person’s waist measurement. According to the Heart Foundation, men’s waists should measure 37 inches or less and women should be 31.5 inches or less (pregnant women are an exception to this guideline.) A sign of having high fasting blood sugar levels is being pre-diabetic or having diabetes. However, high blood pressure and triglyceride and HDL cholesterol levels don’t present obvious symptoms and the only way to measure these factors is through blood work.
Living a healthy, active life is the best way to prevent developing metabolic syndrome in the first place. Eating a healthy diet with plenty of vegetables, fruits, and lean proteins helps to maintain high levels of functionality. It’s also important to exercise regularly. Adults are recommended to exercise at moderate levels for at least 30 minutes 5 times a week, although more may be necessary if you’re trying to lose weight. Adults are also advised to avoid tobacco products and to manage their stress levels. However, in some cases, people may be genetically predisposed to developing these conditions and may need to be more diligent in their self-care or seek medical support. The chiropractors at Quality Chiropractic are dedicated to helping their patients to live their healthiest lives and provide a number of services and counseling to help patients make better choices to reduce their risk of developing metabolic syndrome.
