Dry Needling Q & A

What is dry needling?

Dry Needling is designed to restore full function to a muscle locked in dysfunctional movement. It consists of sterile needles inserted into the meat of stiff, locked, or otherwise dysfunctional muscles. Through the process of creating small tears in the muscle, similar to weight training, the muscle responds by flooding the affected area with blood to facilitate healing. As the muscle heals, it returns to its normal function while reducing the level of pain experienced by the patient. Additionally, the myofascial bands around the muscles will reduce in stiffness restoring movement. The doctors at Quality Chiropractic are skilled in the use of dry needling to help a patient recover faster and more effectively from injury.

How does dry needling help?

Dry needling targets trigger points in the body to reduce pain threshold as well as restore movement. As the muscles heal, the patient experiences improved physical functionality and movement. Dry needling is typically used in conjunction with other therapies and interventions to unlock stiff and under functioning muscles. In addition, Dry needling can cause improved muscle restoration through the blood that is stimulated to come to the area of the injury. As the muscle heals, patients will notice that they have less pain, discomfort, and stiffness. Contact your doctor at Quality Chiropractic to see if you’re a candidate for dry needling.

What are trigger points?

Trigger points are micro spasms in the muscle. Typically forming in the center of the muscle, trigger points can cause significant pain and discomfort for those experiencing them. Often referred to as “knots,” trigger points are a common source of discomfort for many patients. Additionally, trigger points can go unnoticed due to referred pain. Referred pain is when a tension or spasm in one area of the body causes discomfort or pain in another area of the body. Tight muscles in the neck or jaw can lead to headaches, and these headaches will often not reside until the muscles in the affected area are treated. The doctors at Quality Chiropractic are skilled in identifying when muscles are causing pain or if there is a corresponding trigger point that is causing the dysfunction. Contact one of our doctors today if you are having pain that doesn’t seem to go away.
