Laser therapy — also called cold laser therapy or low-level light therapy — is a noninvasive therapy used to stimulate tissue healing in muscles, ligaments, cartilage, and tendons. Unlike hot lasers that are used to cut through tissues during surgery, cold laser therapy gently stimulates the healing process of your tissues to decrease recovery time from injuries.
Laser therapy can be used for acute and chronic injuries like:
Laser therapy can be used safely on any area of the body and has been shown to revitalize injured or inflamed skin due to rashes, edema, and swelling.
Laser therapy involves applying light energy with a handheld device directly to your skin. The light energy penetrates your skin painlessly and is absorbed by cells in the treatment area. As your cells absorb the light energy, they begin a series of processes to revitalize and repair the injured tissues.
Laser therapy is a quick and painless procedure in which your provider applies the handheld laser wand to your skin and uses the wand to pulse a light beam through your skin. During the procedure, you wear light-blocking glasses to protect your eyes. You don’t feel any heat, vibration, or sensations other than the handheld wand touching your skin.
The procedure lasts about five minutes. Your provider recommends a series of sessions based on your symptoms and injury. These sessions may occur multiple times per week or be spaced out as needed.
Laser therapy can be used in conjunction with other therapies like chiropractic care and physical therapy for the best results. Since laser therapy stimulates a natural healing process, it can take several weeks to see results.
If you’re interested in laser therapy, discuss treatment options with your provider to determine if it’s a safe and effective choice for your condition and symptoms. In some cases — like a history of cancer or being pregnant — laser therapy is not recommended.
