Choosing fresh seasonal produce is a great choice for your wallet and the environment. 

But how do you know what's in season? Furthermore, how do you know if what you're buying is even going to taste good?! 

December is a great time of year for a whole slew of veggies.

It's peak season for chard, chicory, fennel, endive, leeks, radicchio, turnips, radishes and celeriac. And that's not all! Broccoli, brussel sprouts, cauliflower, celery, and spinach are the seasonal fan favorites here at Quality Chiropractic.

What to look for:

- Deep green/bluish color in the head

- Tightly packed buds

- Firm stalk 

 

What to avoid: 

- Yellow buds
- Any sort of odor
- Soft stalk 

Brussel Sprouts

What to look for:

- Bright green color

- Firmness

- Tight bulbs

- Heavy for the size

 

What to avoid:

-Yellow leaves

- Black spots

 

Cauliflower

What to look for:

- Firm head

- Tightly closed buds

- Crisp, green leaves

 

What to avoid:

- Excessive yellowing

- Softness

 

Celery

What to look for:

- Firm stalks

- Tightly packed stalks

- Bright green leaves

- Crispness

 

What to avoid:

- Rubbery feel

- Brown spots

 

Spinach 

What to look for:

- Deep, green leaves

- Dry leaves that don't stick together too much 

 

What to avoid:

- Wilting

- Sliminess
